Sean Gunn believes not making Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would be a “disservice” to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. There was a point in time when the highly-anticipated threequel was supposed to be in production earlier this year to meet a tentative 2020 release date. However, everything changed when Disney fired James Gunn last summer, after old offensive tweets of his resurfaced. In the aftermath, Guardians 3 was placed on the back burner as Marvel figures out the next steps. In the meantime, the studio is developing new projects like Black Widow and Eternals.

A new timetable for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is unknown, but the film sounds like it’s still very much in the cards. Last month, Chris Pratt went so far as to promise it was still happening and Kevin Feige’s commented Marvel is still using Gunn’s script. All the uncertainty surrounding Guardians 3 may make some viewers concerned, but James Gunn’s brother Sean is confident the movie will eventually come into fruition, particularly for the fans.

Speaking with Variety while at the Captain Marvel premiere, Sean Gunn touched on Guardians of the Galaxy 3’s status and expressed excitement for the team coming back together and delivering a rousing conclusion to the trilogy:

Finding a new director to helm the project is undoubtedly the greatest challenge here. The first two Guardians movies were so ingrained with Gunn’s sensibilities and filmmaking DNA that anyone who comes in runs the risk of being nothing more than a pale imitator. That’s one of the main reasons why fan-favorite picks like Edgar Wright, Phil Lord & Chris Miller, and Taika Waititi have all said they’re not interested. Even though Guardians of the Galaxy falls under the MCU umbrella and is part of that giant machine, the films owe a lot of their success to Gunn crafting humorous and heartfelt narratives. Particularly since Marvel’s keeping Gunn’s script, the trick will be hiring a director who can compellingly translate Gunn’s material while also leaving their own stamp on it. On-paper, that’s a perilous tightrope that could lead to disastrous results.

“I don’t know exactly how that’s all gonna work, but I feel like we are going to make the third movie, I’m excited to make it. I think it’s a disservice to the fans if we didn’t make it and I know the people who worked on the Guardians movies are really a family, and we’re gonna come together and make the best movie we can regardless of who’s in charge.”

Circling back to Sean Gunn’s comments, it would be highly disappointing if Guardians of the Galaxy 3 never came into fruition. Viewers have been following these characters since 2014 and if their stories were to end now, it would feel incomplete. Though Feige’s said Gunn’s influence on Marvel’s future cosmic movies was overblown, Guardians 3 at the very least would have provided the titular group with a (hopefully) emotional and poignant closing chapter that tied up their arcs with some sense of finality. Fingers crossed everything works out well and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 gives everyone the great experience they deserve.
