How to fix no sound in .mkv video files in Windows 10?

The Movies & TV app in Windows 10 does not support DTS audio. So that could probably be the cause of your problem here. Or there might be some video codecs missing on your system. Well, whatever may be the case, this guide will help you get the sound in your .mkv file.

Use a third-party media application:

As Windows Movies & TV application is not able to play DTS audio, so you will have to switch to a different audio player for now to play DTS audio. Some of the best players that you can try for videos is Gom Player, KM Player, or the VLC media player. You can even try Media Player Classic. All of these players are quite capable of playing any video file unless it is corrupted.

Convert video file from .mkv to .mp4:

Sometimes changing the format of the video file from .mkv to .mp4 can fix your issue with the sound of the video file too. For the conversion, you can use the VLC media player.

  • Launch the VLC media player.
  • Click on the Media menu.
  • Select the Convert/ Save option.
  • Upload the problematic .mkv file.
  • Select the format in which you want to save the file. Here, choose it as .mp4.
  • Then set the location of the destination folder.
  • Then start the process.

Once the conversion is complete, try playing the .mp4 file now. The audio should play. But for some reason, if you still don’t get any audio, then try the next solution.

Install the K-lite codec pack:

The K-lite Codec Pack is one of the most popular and high-quality codec packages that can find. It will let you play the problematic .mkv files usually by encoding or decoding the video file correctly. So download it from this site and install it on your system. Then restart your computer and then try opening the mkv file again. If you still don’t get any audio, then the issue is definitely with the video file.

Re-download the file:

If none of the fixes mentioned above worked out your issue with no sound in .mkv file, then the problem is with the file. Maybe the video file is corrupted, or there are some other issues with it. So the only thing you can do here is to get the file again. If you had downloaded the file before, then download it again and then check if there is audio with the new file. If even the new file does not get you any audio, then the problem is with the source of the file. In that case, get that video file from some other location.
