Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Evans says he doesn’t have a cameo as old Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show. Evans originated the role of the MCU’s Steve Rogers in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, going on to star in two more solo movies as well as all four Avengers movies. Evans wrapped up his time as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame earlier this year. In the film, Steve travels back to the 1940s and gets his dance with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), living out a non-superhero life. Old Steve appears in the modern day to bequeath his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

Though Evans may have retired as Captain America, the mantle lives on in the MCU through Steve’s closest friends, Sam and Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). As confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 slate includes the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, focusing on Sam and Bucky. While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sees the return of both of Captain America’s best friends - and other characters like Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) - the original Star-Spangled Man won’t be making an appearance.

In an interview with ET to promote his new movie, Knives Out, Evans was asked about the possibility that he could have a cameo as old Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but the actor was quick to shoot it down, saying, “No, no.” When the interviewer changed tact and asked if there’s a possibility of any future appearances by Evans as Captain America in the MCU, he said, “No, probably not.” The actor went on to explain:

While Evans doesn’t completely shoot down the possibility of returning to the MCU later on, he does confirm he won’t be appearing as old Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While it has been inferred that Steve Rogers won’t appear in the Disney+ series, this is the first time someone involved in the MCU has commented on the matter. It makes sense, given the show will focus on Falcon and Winter Soldier after Captain America retires and passes on the mantle to Sam. The finality of Avengers: Endgame allows for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to start a new chapter in the Captain America legacy, and that would be undermined if Evans were to make a cameo - no matter how much fans would enjoy seeing more of Evans’ old Captain America.

It was really tough to [say goodbye]. Well there was a million ways that whole tenure with Marvel could’ve gone wrong, and it didn’t. So to stick the landing so well, it would be a shame to revisit unless there was something very unique that we felt the need to reveal. So for now it just feels like let’s just be content with how well it ended.

There’s always the possibility that Evans does have a cameo in the show and is merely keeping it a secret. After all, Marvel Studios is infamous for the lengths to which they’ll go to keep spoilers a secret. That said, the actor has said many times since Avengers: Endgame came out that he’s done as Captain America for now. Though Evans won’t rule out a return as Captain America in the MCU - and maintains there’s still a possibility in his latest comments - it does appear that he’s trying to temper expectations for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier so fans aren’t disappointed when he doesn’t show up. Ultimately, fans will have to wait and see when the show hits Disney+ next year. But with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier currently filming, it’s possible we’ll know more soon about Evans’ involvement, or lack thereof, as old Captain America.
