Directors Joe and Anthony Russo squash the ongoing theory that the MCU’s Nick Fury and Star Wars’ Mace Windu are the same person. Helming Marvel Studios’ two biggest films - Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the duo first started in the franchise with Captain America: The Winter Soldier where they worked closely with Samuel L. Jackson. Considering that and the subsequent times they’ve worked with the actor, they take on the latest hypothesis that Fury and Windu are one and the same.
The theory began when Peter Parker first met Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming established the young hero’s obsession with Star Wars, so many were wondering why there wasn’t any commentary on the fact that Fury looked so much like Windu. This resulted in fans coming up with the idea that Fury and Windu might be the same person, but the Russos debunk this notion with a straightforward, frankly less exciting answer.
Dropping by during this week’s Star Wars Show, Joe and Anthony Russo were presented with said argument, and asked how that works considering that Peter is a known Star Wars enthusiast. The pair dismissed the idea, with Anthony saying that “they just look like those characters.“ Joe seconded, adding that “Nick Fury happens to look a lot like Mace Windu.”
Some might argue that this is a farfetched possibility, but considering that Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm are both under the Walt Disney umbrella, it’s not outside the realm of possibility for some inter-connectivity. It’s no secret that the MCU has long been inspired by the longer-running space opera, as evidenced by the Russo Brothers talking about how movies such as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back have inspired their work. Even Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has referenced the Star Wars universe a couple of times when talking about his own film series. Despite all this, it’s safe to assume that any massive crossover between the two highly successful pop culture film franchises won’t be happening any time soon.
This doesn’t mean, however, that the public will have a scarcity of content to enjoy from both the MCU and Star Wars. After wrapping up The Infinity Saga with Endgame, the Marvel universe is in a rebuilding mode, with brand new properties to come in Phase 4 like Chloe Zhao’s Eternals and Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Of course, there are also sequels for established characters in the cards. As for the galaxy, far, far away, the Skywalker saga is tipped to end with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and after that, new trilogies are expected to roll out. On top of that, both are also busy producing content for Disney Plus.
